Fleas and other Parasites
Fleas are blood sucking parasites which feed on our pets, but can also bite humans as well. They can reproduce rapidly, such that once you spot a flea on your pet or in your house it often represents just the tip of the iceberg, as 95% of the problem will be in the form of eggs, larvae and pupae living in the environment (eg carpets, chairs and bedding).
There are a variety of ways to either prevent fleas or to treat your pet to get rid of them once a problem has been discovered.
These include:
Spot-on solutions, tablets, sprays, injections (for cats only) and household sprays for the environment. The critical part of successful treatment or prevention is the advice needed to go with these products. All our staff are trained to help you, and if it’s more than just routine advice you need, then arrange to see one of our qualified nurses or Vets for the very best advice.
We can also advise how to treat rabbits and small mammals using products specifically designed for them, as most cat and dog preparations are unsuitable for this purpose.
If you are visiting an area of the UK affected by tick infestations, or if you are travelling abroad we can advise you on the best treatment to use to protect your pet.
Fleas can also carry and transmit tapeworms and so concurrent worming is also advisable if fleas are seen.
Many pet shop purchased products used for treating fleas are only repellent and do not actually kill fleas. Many clients find they spend money and time on these products only to find they have not worked. It’s usually cheaper to get the best advice and products right from the start!!
